Stones exhibition in Seoul

stART me up! Art inspired by the Rolling Stones in Gallery CHA.
Seoul, March 17, 2009 - stART me up! an exhibition featuring the art inspired by the Rolling Stones in Gallery CHA in cooperation with Kariem Hamed. For the first time in Korea, artworks and memorabilia focused on the Rolling Stones and its members will be on display. The exhibition will open on March 25th and will run through April 10th.

The Rolling Stones have been notoriously provocative throughout their career that spans over 5 decades. With their rebellious style in their music and personal lives, they earned their place as the Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World. They have been setting trends throughout their career, when it comes to music, concerts and touring, and the visual images they have used for promotional purposes.

During their career, they have attracted world leading artists around them. The Tongue and Lip design, undoubtedly one of the most iconic designs in the world, has been created by John Pasche. Many attribute it to Andy Warhol, but Andy has created the Sticky Fingers album cover, and continued to work with the Stones and Mick Jagger throughout the next decade. More recently, they have teamed up with Jeff Koons for the design of their Licks tour (2002-2003).
For their tours they always hired top notch photographers to document their on and off stage lives on the road. Famous names like Gered Mankowitz, Dominique Tarlé, Ethan Russell, Michael Putland , Jim Marshall and Annie Leibovitz joined them on several tours, but also former bass player of the Rolling Stones, Bill Wyman, made great photographic contributions throughout his tenure with the Stones. Last but not least, Ronnie Wood, the second guitar player, is a renowned painter and one of the best selling print artists in the world.

Where concert and tour posters in the early 60's were really functional, with only words and later on pictures of the bands they advertised, later on in the 60's they became more of a statement of lifestyle and culture. The most famous posters in the world have been designed by a few very famous artists in San Francisco, creating a subculture among rock lovers. The Stones have also used these artists, and these posters are unique for their design and communicative power. A selection of the most iconic designs will be on display at the exhibition.

The exhibition will give the Korean public an overview of 5 decades of Rolling Stones related art and memorabilia, reflecting the passion and excitement of their performances, the mystery and attraction of their lives, and the dedication of their followers and collectors.

Organized by Gallery CHA in cooperation with Kariem Hamed, with special thanks to V!P’s gallery in the Netherlands for their support. For more information, contact Gallery CHA at 02 730 1700
